Leadership is Energy – Show Up, Play Full Out & Make an Impact!
Mar 18, 2025Have you ever hesitated before stepping into something new, afraid of making a mistake?
Maybe you held back because you didn’t want to get it wrong or be seen struggling.
What if I told you that leadership isn’t about perfection, but about how you show up—especially in the messy moments?
This week in Monday Moves, we explored the power of playing full out and how true leadership is about energy, presence, and the willingness to go first—even when it’s uncomfortable. Because the energy you bring is the energy you receive.
A Leadership Lesson from Falling Flat on My Face (Literally!)
Years ago, when I was running my dance studio, I was teaching a group of dancers across the floor. I was demonstrating a combination, dancing full out, giving it my all—when suddenly, I slipped and fell.
Flat on the floor.
For a split second, the entire room froze. The students, already nervous about trying the combination, looked at me with wide eyes, as if their worst fear had just happened—right in front of them.
And that’s when I realized—I had been given a golden gift of leadership.
I could have just laughed it off and moved on, but instead, I chose to turn my mistake into a teaching moment.
I walked through exactly what I had done wrong, not just to correct my own movement but to ease their fear of making the same mistake. By breaking it down, I took the pressure off. I had already survived the worst-case scenario, and I was fine.
The energy in the room shifted. Instead of nervous tension, there was relief. Instead of hesitation, there was permission to try—even if it wasn’t perfect.
That moment bonded us as a class, but more importantly, it taught me one of the most valuable leadership lessons:
People don’t need a perfect leader. They need a leader who is willing to show up, take action, and guide them through the messy moments.
Are You Leading with Energy or Holding Back?
In the dance world, we often say “Dance full out.” That means no hesitating, no half-effort—just full commitment.
But this applies to every part of life.
✔ You can have the best mentor, the perfect opportunity, and all the knowledge in the world, but if you hold back, you won’t grow.
✔ Leadership isn’t about always getting it right—it’s about modeling the courage to go first.
✔ When you play full out, you invite others to do the same.
If you’re waiting until you’re fully ready, fully confident, or fully perfect, you’re going to stay stuck. Leadership is energy. It’s movement. It’s showing up, giving your best, and trusting that even your “falls” will serve a greater purpose.
